PEARS / COLLECTION ORCHARD
The mother plant was recovered in the convent of the Zoccolanti friars of Gualdo Tadino (Perugia), but the same fig was later recovered also in another convent of the same monastic order in Citta’ di Castello (Perugia). Its origin is unknown. The tree It is vigorous with irregular and spreading behavior. In the old times the monks used its wood to make clogs. It is very hardy and is mostly propagated through shoots. The fruit is a biennial variety. The breba crop’s figs in July are very large, with a long neck that takes the fruit’s size to even 15-18 centimeters in length. The skin is light brown-purplish. The flesh is a light red, not very aromatic, not too sweet and watery. The figs of the main crop in September have the same shape but are much shorter, sweeter and more aromatic. Harvest and ripening The fruits of the breba crop are harvested during the second half of July. The main crop is harvested all September. These figs could be included in the group of eggplant figs, which incorporates different types of figs that share that vegetable’s shape. The early crop figs are sought after for their size but not for their flavor. The main crop figs are in fact to be preferred both for their taste and for having fewer achenes.
