Verdino Fig

PEARS / COLLECTION ORCHARD

The mother plant was recovered in the area of Citta’ di Castello (Perugia), but this variety was widespread in all of Central Italy, especially between Umbria and Tuscany. It is still present in individual specimens. Its origin is unknown. The tree is moderately vigorous and has irregular habit. It is almost always cultivated as a bush and is mainly propagated through shoots. The fruit flowers once. The September figs are medium sized, of rounded shape and with a short neck. The peel is bright green with a few grooves. The flesh is a light pink-yellow, with few small achenes. The main crop matures from mid-September to the beginning of October. This variety is certainly amongst the sweetest ones and for this reason it can be suitable for drying, for compote and for marmalade. If dried, these figs can be aromatized according to Galeno’s recipe: with thyme, pepper and savory. When eaten fresh it is one of the best figs to be eaten with prosciutto.
