Roggia Apple

APPLES / COLLECTION ORCHARD

The mother plants were recovered in Volterrano and Morra, two small towns in the Citta’ di Castello (Perugia) area and close to the border with Tuscany. They were also found in the Sansepolcro, Anghiari and Pieve Santo Stefano areas (all part of the Arezzo municipality). Similar to the russet Tuscan variety, it is cultivated in the high hills areas of Tuscany and northwestern Umbria in individual specimens. Another variety similar to this one exists in other regions in Central Italy and goes by the name of rozza or ruzza (russet). The variety of Roggia apple is good for the ruggedness of the tree and for the organoleptic characteristics of the fruit. It is suitable for cultivation in high altitudes. The tree is moderately vigorous and has spreading crown; it crops regularly and blooms late in the season. It is very hardy and productive. The fruit is medium, roundish, slightly flattened and non-symmetrical. The stem is medium-short and inserted in a deep, narrow and almost acute cavity. The skin is a green-yellow, covered with russeting. The flesh is white, slightly tart, very aromatic and crisp. It is of excellent quality. It is traditionally harvested with the waning moon in October and stores well in the fruit-house until the following spring. The harvest must be done in one day and with neither damp nor too dry weather, carefully detaching the fruit from the point of insertion on the branch; by avoiding with care any type of pressure it will store a long time. These apples are suitable for drying.
