Regina Claudia Gialla Plum

The mother plants were recovered in the areas of Città di Castello (Perugia) and Pietralunga (Perugia) but this variety was widespread in all of Umbria especially in the high hills and mountain areas. It used to be also called dorata (golden) for its color. According to some it reached Italy from France around 1500 and was dedicated to Queen Claudia, wife of Francesco I. As with all of the plums belonging to the “Regina Claudia” group, it acclimated very well in Italy. The tree is moderately vigorous, very hardy and with irregular habit. It is very fertile and suited for all systems of cultivation. Bloom time is medium to late, around the 10th of April, making it suited for areas with late frosts. The fruit has a good size and a roundish shape. The flesh is semi-clingstone to the pit. The skin is thin, a golden yellow and slightly waxy. Sometimes it has some red dotting in the sun. The flesh is yellow, very aromatic, sweet and flavorful. These plums are harvested around mid-August, but once off the tree they don’t all mature at the same time. It is used for fresh eating and for classic preserving (jams and compotes). According to Tamaro, famous pomologist at the beginning of 1900, this plum could not be missing from any orchard. Gallesio defined it as the Queen of Plums.
