Polsola Apple

APPLES / COLLECTION ORCHARD

The mother plant was recovered in the Gualdo Tadino (Perugia) area. Its origin is unknown and no other plants of this variety were recovered. It is well adapted to medium and high hills areas. The tree is moderately vigorous, irregular, highly productive and blooms late. From our research this tree appears to be rather sensible to fungi such as Blackspot. The fruit It is medium-small, elongated, cylindrical and tapered in the lower end. The stem is very long and thin, inserted in a narrow and deep cavity. The calyx is semi-open and serrated. The skin is yellow-greenish and blushed red from the sun. It is smooth, waxy and with little marked lenticels. The flesh is slightly sour, not too juicy but very aromatic. It is harvested very late around early November and after the first frosts. It stores wonderfully in the fruit-house. It can be eaten starting in December. Not to be confused with the polsella apple, aka limoncella, this apple was praised for its storing capacity. It can be eaten fresh or cooked in water after being sliced into wedges and aromatized with cinnamon and clove. It is beneficial “for the healthy and for the sick” according to Agostino Gallo; it can also be used as a potpourri for the laundry.
