Moscatello Grape

OTHER FRUITS / COLLECTION ORCHARD

It was a white grape widely cultivated in the High Tiber Valley and it was recovered in various areas of this region. It was “married” with the field maple and up until a few decades ago, it was cultivated in a few selected vineyards. It may be a derivation of the Muscat grape and documents going back to the 1400’s describe its cultivation. A black variety of this grape also exists. It is a very suitable fruit with which to make pergolas and it is very resistant to poronospora. In the past the vineyards of this grape varietal were separated from other vineyards. It does not have high productivity. The grape-bunch is medium, elongated and narrowly cylindrical and its structure is quite loose. The grapes are small, round and with a medium thin skin, not at all waxy and with brown dotting. Their flavor is sweet and aromatic. Maturation comes early, generally towards mid-September, and for this reason these grapes are set apart and processed into wine separately. It is also dried and turned into Vinsanto. These grapes were used to make a valuable wine to be given as a gift to important people. As Tanara said in the 1600’s: “in this country a sweet, aromatic and tasty beverage is made out of this grape”.
