OTHER FRUITS / COLLECTION ORCHARD
The Maliforme quince variety (Cydonia oblonga Maliforme) is rounded, with shallow ribbing, flattened at the calyx cavity and slightly pointed at the stem insertion, which is short and thick. The fruit is covered with dense fuzz and has firm, yellowish-white flesh. It is highly aromatic.
Harvested at the end of October, it should be eaten cooked rather than fresh because the flesh is very astringent. In the past, it was believed that pregnant women who frequently ate quinces would give birth to children of remarkable diligence and dedication.
It has astringent properties and helps regulate the intestine; it has also traditionally been used as a soothing remedy for coughs. Quinces were often placed among linen to perfume it pleasantly.
