Lardaia Pear

PEARS / COLLECTION ORCHARD

The mother plants were recovered near Pietralunga (Perugia). They used to be cultivated in these high hills areas in isolated specimens. Their origin is unknown but some information is available about a presence of this variety in Tuscany. This plant is very vigorous, hardy and with spreading habit; it is productive and blooms late. The fruit, often in clusters, is small and spherical, with a very long, moderately thick, brick red stem. The calyx is small and just hinted. The skin is on the average thin, a green-yellow with widespread russeting. The flesh is white, juicy and very sugary even if slightly granular. It has an excellent flavor. It is harvested at the end of July and is suitable for fresh eating and jams. In fruit farming catalogs from as recently as the 1800’s there is still mention of this pear.
