Giugnina Pear

PEARS / COLLECTION ORCHARD

The mother plant was recovered in the area of Citta’ di Castello (Perugia) although it is certain that it was well known and particularly widespread in the High Tiber Valley. Its origin is unknown but it was extensively cultivated because it is one of the first pears to reach maturity. The tree is generally vigorous, with compressed habit and alternate cropping. It is very rugged and suitable for cultivation in the high hills areas. These are small fruits mostly gathered in small clusters. They have a medium pear-like shape at times also ovoid. The stem is medium and not too thick. The skin is yellow with few marked lenticels. The flesh is white, very sweet, melting and very aromatic. It is not granular. It is harvested at the end of June, for immediate fresh consumption or perhaps for drying. It does not travel well. This is a valuable fruit for its early season. Besides being suited for fresh eating it can also be preserved in wine inside clay pots, as Columella advised.
