PEARS / COLLECTION ORCHARD
The mother plant was recovered in the Gualdo Tadino (Perugia) area. Neither the origin nor other specimens of this variety are known. The tree is very vigorous and hardy, with spreading and irregular habit and high productivity. The fruit is a small, egg-shaped and very short fruit. The stem is long and not too thick. The calyx is absent. The skin is smooth and a bright green colour tending to become lighter when ripe. The flesh is white, crisp, very juicy and tending to a vitreous consistency, hence its name. It is harvested at the end of July and is for immediate consumption. Quoted by Mattioli around the 1500’s, these fruits were described by Agostino Gallo in 1569 as “very delicate when eaten fresh” while Tanara in 1644 defines them amongst the best summer pears. Our farmers used to say that this small pear quenches the thirst as “a glass of water does”. If possible it should be eaten fresh but it can also be preserved in wine or in alcohol as is.
