PEARS / COLLECTION ORCHARD
The mother plant was recovered in the area of Citta’ di Castello (Perugia), near the border with Tuscany. Its origin is unknown and just a few individual plants were recovered. Its cultivation is now neglected and on the verge of extinction. The tree is moderately vigorous and hardy with compressed habit. It crops on alternate years and blooms mid-to late in the season. The fruit is small, of moderate egg-shape and grouped in small clusters. The stem is long and without petiole and calyx cavities. The skin is greenish in colour with dark red shading from the sun. The flesh is white, very sugary and aromatic, with a small core. Harvest and ripening It matures in mid-August and it is for immediate eating. Fruit farming manuals of the late 1700’s and of the past century mention a pera garofana (carnation pear). We think it may be the same variety. Its name most likely derives from the scent of the carnation, as it is also the case with the mela Garofina.
