PEARS / COLLECTION ORCHARD
The mother plant was recovered in the mountains near Pietralunga (Perugia). Reference to this pear is made in many documents of the 1400’s relating to the High Tiber Valley. Individual specimens used to be cultivated in the high hill areas of these border zones, near the region of Marche. It was also very well known in the Umbrian valleys. It may owe its name to a possible Tuscan origin. The plant is very vigorous, hardy and with almost compressed habit. It is quite productive and blooms late. The fruit is a nicely shaped pear – medium-small size – almost spherical and at times pointy towards the stem insertion. The petiole is medium-short and on average thick. The calyx is absent. The skin is very thick, rough and a bright green background color with a slight reddening in the sun. It has numerous, dark, slightly raised and small lenticels. The flesh is white, not too juicy and medium granular. It’s harwested at beginning of november, after the first frosts. It can be stored in the fruit-house for a long time in the straw to ripe. During this period the skin color changes to the yellow and the pulp be comes more juicy. It is a very hardy fruit especially suitable for cooking and preserving.
