Fiorentina Apple

APPLES / COLLECTION ORCHARD

The mother plants were recovered in the area of Pieve Santo Stefano (Arezzo). This variety is cultivated in high hills in isolated specimens and can be found in all of the Toscana-Romagna Appennines area. It is a very good autumn variety and is valued because it stores well for a long time in the fruit-house, maintaining its fresh fruit characteristics. It is suitable for cultivation in the high hills and in the mountains. The tree is vigorous with spreading habit; it crops every other year and blooms mid-late season. It is very hardy and very ornamental when laden with fruits. The fruit is medium, somewhat round and flattened asymmetrically. The stem is medium-long and inserted in a deep and open cavity, while the calyx is semi-open. The skin is thick, waxy, and a straw yellow colour blushed with a very marked red patch from the sun. The flesh is white, slightly sour, aromatic, crisp and juicy. It is a variety of excellent quality deserving of attention. It is traditionally harvested in October and stores very well until the following spring. This apple is suitable to be eaten fresh and to be cooked. In the past, a special use for this and other thick skinned apples was for decorating dining tables: the apple would delicately be emptied of its flesh without breaking its skin and would be filled with jasmine oil or other aromatic oils. A wick would then be placed inside it to make it into an original aromatic lamp.
