The mother plant was recovered in the area of Citta’ di Castello (Perugia) and it is still often found in the hills between Umbria and Toscana. Its name comes from its similarity with the cornelian cherry dogwood (Cornus mas) both for its shape and for the firmness of its flesh. The tree is a moderately vigorous and hardy tree, with compressed habit. It blooms mid to late in the season, around the middle of April. It is not selffertile. The fruit It is a medium sized fruit, of cordate form with a clear suture line. The stalk is long and of medium thickness. The color of the skin is bright red. The flesh is red, quite firm, and attached to the pit. It has an excellent sweet and aromatic flavor. Ripening tends to be late, towards the end of June, but ripening is in stages. It does not bruise and travels well. Given its firmness, this fruit is suitable for preserving in syrup and in jams
