APPLES / COLLECTION ORCHARD
The mother plants were recovered in the area of Gualdo Tadino (Perugia) but the origin of this variety is unknown. It is cultivated in the high hills of this area, in individual plants. It is a good autumn variety and it is very appreciated for its capacity to store in the fruit-house. It is suitable for mountain and high hill cultivation. The plant is very vigorous and rugged, with compressed habit. It crops regularly and blooms late. The fruit is medium-large, oblong-conical shaped, being slightly tapered towards the calyx. The stem is medium-long, inserted in a moderately deep and open cavity. The calyx is semi-open. The skin is very thick; it is a green tending to yellow when ripe and has sparse, large and very marked lenticels. The flesh is white, slightly sour, aromatic and crisp. It is of very high quality and most of all unusually scented. It is traditionally harvested in October and keeps very well in the fruithouse until the following spring. It may owe its name to its shape that recalls a water or wine jug (brocca). If these apples could be stored under the bed as they once were, they would be a fantastic deodorant for the house! In any case, as it was suggested in the past, the skin of the apple can be burned to eliminate bad odors from the room. It is also a very good apple for cooking.
