He mother plants were recovered in the area of Pieve Santo Stefano (Arezzo) and Verghereto (Forli’). Its origin is unknown but individual plants used to be cultivated in high hills areas. In the area of propagation only a few specimen are left. The tree is moderately vigorous, hardy and with compressed habit. It is moderately productive. The typical reddish color of the fruit is also on the one-year old branches and the young leaves. The fruit is a medium-small size, ovoid and very short in shape. The stem is short and thick. The calyx is small and not too deep. The skin is of medium thickness, an even green colour with small russeted lenticels. The flesh is typically pink and the seed-bearing ovary is deep red; it is a juicy and very sugary pear with a very good flavor. It is harvested during the second half of August, it is suitable for fresh eating given that it is perishable and does not travel well. Cocomerina (little watermelon) – the other name under which this variety it is also known – derives from this fruit’s special coloring.
