This is a variety of the species Prunus cerasus (sour cherry), as is the visciola, and from which it differs in the fruit. It was recovered in the areas of Pietralunga and Vallo di Nera (Perugia Province), in single plants. This variety was also widespread on the Marche side of the Appenines. It is a medium size tree, irregularly shaped, with spreading habit and drooping branches. It blooms late, in the second half of April. It sprouts many root suckers, which then produce new plants. It is quite hardy and less demanding of the soil than the sour cherry tree. It is quite resistant to monilia. The fruit is a medium sized, round cherry. Its stem is medium-short and thick, coming out of a shallow and large cavity. Its skin is light red and of medium thickness. Its very juicy, clingstone flesh is yellow, with a slightly pinkish cast and soft. Harvesting time is late, towards the end of July, but ripening comes in stages. It does not travel well and it bruises easily. This fruit is not too suitable for fresh eating; it was in fact cultivated especially for making jams and marmalades.
